THE HUMBLING CROSS OF DISUNITY

"For there must be also divisions among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you." (1 Cor 11:19)

Just yesterday I mentioned this passage to an Orthodox clergyman, one who has been working tirelessly for church-unity, and specifically for the preparations for the Holy and Great Council.  I tend to think of him as one of those "which are approved."  But when I mentioned this passage to him, the clergyman unexpectedly replied, "the 1 Corinthians passage makes me realize how abysmally I have failed."  And when I asked , Why?, he said, "because I've been thinking: I haven't always focused on the goal..."

Humility!  How refreshing and liberating it is, not to play the "blame game," or point fingers at others, as we bear our common cross of disunity and other human failings.  Today let me take up this cross, as God's humbling gift; as His tap on my shoulder, reminding me of my own failings and loss of focus.  Let me bear our humbling cross, rather than deepen our divisions through burdensome self-justification and self-righteousness.  Today let the apostles's liberating, humbling call be heard in my heart: "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Gal 6:2)

THE FUTILE WAYS OF OUR FATHERS

"You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.  He was destined before the foundation of the world but was made manifest at the end of the times for your sake.  Through him you have confidence in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.  Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere love of the brethren, love one another earnestly from the heart.  You have been born anew, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God..." (I Peter 1:18-23)

Indeed I have been "born anew, not of perishable seed but of imperishable."  I am gratefully reminded of this today, when the "futile ways inherited from our fathers" play out, succeeding, for the time being, to divide us and disrupt all efforts to bring us together for a Holy and Great Council.  It is not through the divisive words of men that we have been "born anew," but "through the living and abiding word of God."

So let me stay close to His word today, in "obedience to the truth for a sincere love of the brethren," whatever the "brethren" happen to be saying or doing.  It is through Christ that we have "confidence in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory."  Let us place our hope and faith where it belongs, in Him, Who alone is "without blemish or spot," that we may "love one another earnestly from the heart."  O Lord, may Your word live and abide in us, now and forever.  Amen.

NEVER LOSE HOPE!

"We should never lose hope.  No matter what we do, no matter how far we fall, no matter how often we are injured and hurt--we should never ever despair or lose hope!  Oftentimes thoughts of doubt persist:  'How long will God wait for me?'  Rest assured that as long as God is allowing you to live, it is a guarantee from Him that He is waiting for you!  You cannot deny God the prerogative to wait for your repentance.  With this hope and courage in mind, let us approach the majestic throne of God's grace.  We have innumerable brilliant examples of people who repented, who were previously living far away from God, but who later returned and were not simply saved but even reached great heights of holiness."

COME TO THE WATER...

"In the middle of the Feast, O Savior,/Fill my thirsting soul with the waters of godliness, as You did cry to all:/If anyone thirst let him come to Me and drink!/O Christ God, Fountain of our life, glory to You!" (Byzantine Troparion-hymn of the Mideast of Pentecost)

How appropriate that today, on the "Mideast" of Pentecost (i.e., the midpoint between the feasts of Pascha and Pentecost, according to the Older Calendar), the main hymn or "troparion" talks about spiritual thirst.  Now that Lent is long over, the Paschal celebration has faded, and summer is upon us, I tend to drift, perhaps unnoticeably, into spiritual indifference.  So, as my heart and mind begin to head for a sandy beach, the Church reminds me of a waterless desert, where I may find myself right now, barely noticing it.

The main theme of the Sundays preceding Pentecost is "water," along with spiritual "thirst."  There is the kind of water that is not our ultimate answer, like the pool of Bethesda in John 5 (read in church on the Sunday of the Paralytic), and like Jacob's well in John 4 (read on the next Sunday, of the Samaritan Woman).  It is only in communion with Christ, in His Holy Spirit, that my inner "thirst," the hole in my heart, is filled.

So this season, whether we're headed for a sandy beach, or a swimming pool, or perhaps a pub (shout-out to any readers in Australia), let me take pause and take care, first, of "my thirsting soul."  Today I come to Him and drink, as He invites me to do, on a daily basis.  "O Christ God, Fountain of our life, glory to You!"

ARE YOU STILL FOLLOWING?

"So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.  For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.  He who eats my flesh and drinks my flood abides in me, and I in him.  As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me.  This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever.' This he said in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.  Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, 'This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?'" (John 6:53-60)

And a few verses later, we learn that "after this, many of his disciples drew back and no longer followed him" (John 6:66).  It is one of the many passages in the Gospels that makes me think of C.S. Lewis's famous comment: "That is one of the reasons I believe in Christianity.  It is a religion you could not have guessed."

Indeed, our Lord is unpredictable and, at times, even outrageous.  He calls me to unthinkable heights and unthinkable depths, of intimate connection with Him.  He goes all the way, giving of Himself most entirely, that I may live not just happily, not just contentedly, but "for ever," and in Him, in the living God.  Let me call upon His name today, and stay close to His unpredictable, life-giving word.  Glory be to Him.

WE ARE WORKS IN PROGRESS

"For the saving grace of God has appeared to all people, training us to renounce iniquity and world passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds." (Titus 2:11-14)

Here the Apostle describes the dynamic adventure of our lives "in this world."  On our cross-carrying journeys we embrace, and are "trained" by, the grace that has "already appeared," while awaiting the glory that is yet to appear--"the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ."  So when I lead a God-centered life, I never stand in place, nor do I imagine that I have arrived at my destination, because the saving grace of God is ever "training" us like children, like works in progress.

Today let me embrace what I "already" have, and strive for that which I do "not yet' have, among the "people of His own."  I let Christ give me what He already has on offer, by opening up to Him in heartfelt prayer and surrender.  He has on offer, by opening up to Him in heartfelt prayer and surrender.  He already "gave Himself for us," so let me hand myself and my concerns over to Him as well.  And let me not be discouraged by the virtues and strengths I do "not yet' have, because I am His work in progress.  Glory be to Him.

HIS OR MINE?

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

So what does this mean in practical terms?  Can I "simply" trust in the Lord and "not lean on my own understanding," when faced with daily choices and decisions?  How does this work?

It works by "acknowledging Him in all my ways," that is to day, by acknowledging the paths the Lord is actually "making straight" before me, rather than the ones I might prefer or would like to imagine.  Otherwise, if I "lean on my own understanding," I often find myself behaving like a person in a room with two doors, one wide open and one closed, who keeps staring at the closed one, wish it would open.

Today let me "trust in the Lord with all my heart," acknowledging and accepting the paths He makes straight for me, be it in the people, places, or situations He sends my way.

FIGURES OF THE TRUE: Prayer In The Air

Why is it that prayer comes easier at 25,000 feet?  Locked into an Airbus A320 and seated at a window one has a "front row seat" from which to view the airy, created glories of God unseen by those who are earthbound below.  Whether flung out onto the sea in ships, or up into the sky in a metal tube, there is a sharp separation from the everyday cares while flying in the moving upward to thinner, lighter, air; an allegorical leaving of the things which are passing away for the eternally holy and pure for which we have been destined by our Creator.  There is the feel of commonplace responsibilities falling away as the plane pulses and overcomes that which would hinder it's upward victory over gravity.

When I stepped onto the plane, I inherently gave permission to be taken from one sphere into another.  This turning from the known to the unknown required a measure of faith, which ultimately produced a remote destination at which I hoped to arrive safely. In the skies there are highways by which the aircraft is "vectored" to it's final landing spot; change the compass heading by as little as one degree on a long flight and you can miss your desired destination.

Even while considering the possibility of error in an earthly sense, one can take comfort in these ageless words:  "They that go down to the sea in ships [or up into the skies in planes]...These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep [or in the heavens]...", for there is no place where we can flee from His Presence.  God is our eternal point of reference, being "everywhere present and filling all things".  In His lovingkindness He has given us of His Holy Spirit, who keeps our inner compass set toward Heaven; who gently but firmly redirects us, when necessary, back to the narrow road leading Home.

I turned in my seat to get a better view of the spectacular show of solid cloud cover that billowed into various shapes of pure whipped white, forming columns of moist air.  The radiant sun seems to kiss the tops, casting shadows into the mysterious caverns below.  As usual, I felt all that I would need do was simply step off the wing and go for a cloud walk, traversing mile after mile of untrod, unchartered frontiers.

Worship before the Creator of such beauty became spontaneous, calming my fears that began to surface.  This flash of glory outside my window was a gift from the God who pities and protects, His hand under the belly of this polished shaft fashioned from men's minds, carrying it and those inside safely to our destination.

And then I received a deeper sense of Christ's presence, these truths echoing and underlining all that had come before:  shall He not also carry His own until that final day, when faith shall become sight, when cloud castles become a place prepared; when all that is encapsulated within time shall be shaken, folded up and be made new, dreams of distant cloudscapes evaporating in the light and loveliness of His face?  These "figures of the true" felt and glimpsed while speeding through space only hint at what is yet to come, for they are time-bound; but we are bound for eternal realms where worship and adoration will never cease, for we shall have reached our Destination, Christ Himself, and our Heavenly Father, who loves us and gave His Son for us.

"If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there...if I take the wings of the
morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there
shall thy hand lead and thy right hand shall hold me. " (Psalm 139:8-10)

CHARACTERISTICS OF A TRUE SUPERHERO

THE LORD, HERO OF HEROES

BY ST. NIKOLAI VELIMIROVICH

The Hero Lord, all heroes gathers He,
All who can maintain the Faith,
Faithful to God, to death remain;
And who can, endure sufferings
Offering thanksgiving to God
And of their sufferings being proud;
And, who others can forgive,
And insults to receive as praise;
And still, who others can instruct
From the sinful path to righteousness return
With a sorrowful, compassionate soul,
And who can be merciful,
In the joy of others, to rejoice,
And with a weeping heart to cry;
And who can, themselves restrain
From evil deeds, words and thoughts,
From over-indulging in drink and food
Who, their body, they do not please
But consider it a temporary dustbin
On the battlefield, from which they fight
Their God-given soul to preserve,
To preserve the Christian Faith,
So that into the city of Paradise to enter,
Where the Kingdom of the Lord of Heroes is,
Where, with heroes, the Hero reigns,
With heroes, not of the world.

A Hymn of Praise from the Prologue.

"BEHOLD THE SERVANT OF THE LORD"

"Look at the man who likes to have his own way.  His soul is never at peace.  He is always discontented--this is not right, that is not as it should be.  But the man who is entirely given over to the will of God can pray with a pure mind.  His soul loves the Lord, and he finds everything pleasant and agreeable.

"Thus did the Most Holy Virgin submit herself to God: Behold the servant of the Lord; be it unto me according to Thy word, - then the Lord's words written in the Gospels by the Holy Spirit would live in our souls, and the whole world would be filled with the love of God and how beautiful would life be on earth.  And although God's words have been heard the length and breadth of the universe for so many centuries, people do not understand and will not accept them.  But the man who lives according to God's will, will be glorified in heaven and on earth."

THE JOURNEY DOESN'T END HERE

"These all died in faith, not having received the promises,
but having seen them afar off were assured of them,
embraced them, and confessed that they were
strangers and pilgrims on the earth…But now
they desire a better, that is, a heavenly
country.  Therefore God is not
ashamed to be called their
God, for He has prepared
a city for them."

THE GREATEST GOOD

Happiness is a Pure Heart

How mistaken are those people who seek happiness outside of themselves, in foreign lands and journeys, in riches and glory, in great possessions and pleasures, in diversions and vain things, which have a bitter end! It is the same thing to construct the tower of happiness outside of ourselves, as it is to build a house in a place that is consistently shaken by earthquakes. Happiness is found within ourselves, and blessed is the man who has understood this. Happiness is a pure heart, for such a heart becomes the throne of God. Thus says Christ of those who have pure hearts: “I will visit them, and will walk in them, and I will be a God to them, and they will be my people.” (II Cor. 6:16) What can be lacking to them? Nothing, nothing at all! For they have the greatest good in their hearts: God Himself!

LOVE SUNG, PLAYED, LIVED

Notes on a staff for a musician are a form of shorthand expressing the universal language of music.  It is the conductor and the musicians together who interpret and translate those notes that are important to the symphonic whole.

How are we, who call ourselves Christians, interpreting the exquisite symphony found in the richness of faith into our own lives?  Are we asking the blessed Holy Spirit to be our "Conductor", to touch the strings of our hearts, bringing forth beautiful music that sings of Christ to a music-starved world around us?

It is possible in any orchestra or musical group for a musician to take his eyes off both the conductor and the score in front of him and go his own way.  This only brings about discordant notes heard by those in the audience and his fellow  musicians as well.  But, as God's musicians, we have been shown a better way.

You on a flute may play a different note than I on my cello; but we together, as part of the larger orchestra, are perfectly synchronized when we play the songs the Chief Musician has written that we should play collectively. These lovely notes have been bound together in the life of the Church (incorporating Scripture and Tradition); and when we keep our eyes on this,  and our Conductor, and play with all our heart using the ability He gives, others will both see and hear the beauty that produces a true harmonic miracle.

"…but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head, Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love...be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord..."   Ephesians 4:14-15;19b-20
